Our Priorities

Manny Yekutiel is running for Supervisor because we need to make it easier for everyone to live in San Francisco. This moment calls for new leadership that listens, acts, and brings people together to make San Francisco work for everyone. He will work hard to deliver on three priority areas: Affordability, Safety, and Joy.

Affordability

San Francisco can’t succeed unless people from all walks of life can actually afford to live here. That includes renters, families, artists, small business owners, and anyone building a life in this city.

Manny knows the high cost-of-living creates financial stress, worsens homelessness, makes it harder for small businesses to hire and stay in business, and drives residents out of our communities. As a result, neighborhoods become less stable and less inclusive, populated only by the lucky ones who arrived decades ago or by those who can afford today's San Francisco.

To make our neighborhoods more affordable we will work to:

  • Build 10,000 new units of housing in the district in eight years.

We will create a special use district on Market Street to spur greater density, while reducing financial and administrative burdens on new housing development. See Manny’s housing policy here.

  • Make public education an easier choice for parents.

We've heard from parents across the district who want to send their children to public school but have found the public school system difficult to navigate. As a result, San Francisco has some of the highest rates of private school attendance in the country. We will support school board members who prioritize student success over politics.

  • Provide free child care for all parents.

Manny will support efforts to create an integrated system so that all parents who need child care can send their children to a local provider. We can unlock the funding that the City has already raised through existing tax measures (e.g. Baby Prop C) to create truly universal child care.

Safety

Manny believes everyone should feel safe in their neighborhood and every block should feel clean.

He’s organized hundreds of trash cleanups, lit up dark streets, and brought our community together to tackle our greatest safety challenges. Manny wants to confront open-air drug markets and unsafe encampments with urgency, accountability, and compassion.

To ensure we all feel safe in our communities, we will:

  • Fully staff our police department.

Manny will ensure we address the 500+ police officer shortage so that police can respond quickly, investigate crimes thoroughly, and maintain neighborhood presence. Properly resourcing our police department will allow officers to walk the beat again, conduct traffic enforcement, deter car and home break-ins, and ensure safety in our communities.

  • Get deadly drugs off the street and out of people’s bodies.

Manny will work to combine a zero-tolerance for drug dealing and using on the streets with an expansion of resources, services, and treatment for drug users. We need to arrest drug dealers, disrupt their networks, and cut off demand by bringing more drug users into rehab and treatment.

  • Bring those suffering from mental illness into care, where they can get stabilized.

Manny will ensure the City builds enough psychiatric treatment capacity to handle bringing those in need off the street. He will advocate for the Department of Public Health to have the tools and resources they need to bring people into care, secure longer-term psychiatric holds, and expand treatment beds.

Joy

Manny believes strong communities are built on neighbors knowing each other and coming together, with the kind of street life that makes a place feel alive.

In 2018, he started Manny’s, a community-focused meeting space and coffee shop, which has become a major gathering place for hundreds of events that engage and involve the local community. Additionally, along with Mayor Daniel Lurie, he co-founded the Civic Joy Fund, which funds 17 weekly trash pickups, night markets around the city, block parties, including Downtown First Thursdays, public art, and numerous volunteer activities.

To add a double-dose of joy to our community, we will:

  • Fill all the vacant storefronts.

We will work to create an action plan with the landlords of all 63 vacant storefronts and cut through the red tape so small businesses can easily open and thrive. We can massively simplify zoning rules and building code requirements in commercial areas so customer-serving businesses can open without unnecessary hurdles and delays. We will also transform Castro and Market Streets and make District 8 the most small-business-friendly district in the City. See Manny’s Vacant Storefront Policy here.

  • Invest in our public spaces.

Manny will work to make public spaces more welcoming for families, seniors, and all our neighbors. Together, we will remake Jane Warner Plaza, Harvey Milk Plaza, and Church and Market, and build real town squares in every neighborhood of District 8. Working with the SFMTA, we can repave Market Street from Castro to Octavia, reimagine Market Street downtown, and invest in our slow street infrastructure.

  • Get off our phones.

Create more opportunities for people to build community, see each other, and connect with their friends and neighbors. Manny will work with community members to activate neighborhoods with more fun, free events and partnerships that draw people in and build community and lasting, meaningful relationships.

Manny's policy priorities are underscored by the values of this campaign.
